Pets: Mocha

For the past few months, I have been working towards revamping this website to focus more on the documentary aspect of my photography services. At the same time, I am aiming to integrate the contents on my www.derrickchoo.com website which is still running on ‘mobile unfriendly’ flash. Many blog posts that were planned for months ago have been postponed till the website is updated. This will probably be one of the last blog posts before the update happens. Please be patient when the changes occur as it might take time for the older blog posts to be updated and all the formatting of the pages might be misaligned.

This post features some highlights from Mei Yun’s pet photography shoot at Upper Pierce Reservoir. Mocha is her sweet and good-natured Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.

I find it helpful to play by ear during pet photography sessions as a lot depends on how the pet responds to the camera. My aim is to try and capture some of the pet’s personality as well as the bond between the pet and his/her owner. Like photographing babies or even weddings, there is a lot of anticipating of certain moments or expressions.

During the photoshoot, there was a large troop of monkeys playing nearby in the trees and walking along the water’s edge. Not used to seeing a lot of wildlife here in Singapore, it made for an interesting sight. I was wondering if Mocha would get excited and chase after them but she did a wonderful job of posing for the camera without getting distracted by the chattering monkeys nearby.
