Rebecca’s 1st Birthday Party

April seems to have been a month of children’s birthday parties for me. One of them was Rebecca’s 1st birthday party that was held at The Playhouse at Seb’s Bistro @ The Rochester House. I have been photographing little Becky at 2 to 4-month intervals and it has been fun seeing her develop over the course of a year (for the last shoot, see here).

Rebecca’s birthday party was filled with fun-packed activities for the kiddies. They had an amazing balloon sculpturing man who seemed to be able to make anything and everything (Transformers, princesses, huge guns, planes with a pilot, all kinds of animals and even dinosaurs with teeth!!). The Playhouse was teeming with toys, dress-up costumes and lots of other stuff for children of all ages. The kids also enjoyed a “music and movement” programme which ended with a pretty bunny birthday cake for Rebecca.

Children’s parties are always interesting but challenging to photograph. There is so much going on and children naturally zip around; so the moments to be captured tend to disappear in the blink of an eye! I try to capture a wide range of things that hopefully convey to the viewer a good overall idea and feeling of what the party was like.

The following is a selection of photos from the party:-

Magic Moments Photo Exhibition

I dropped by the Leica Store @ Raffles Hotel Arcade (Singapore) today to check out the Magic Moments Photo Exhibition that has been on since the 22nd of March. The exhibition features 14 prints by 14 photographers. The blurb for the exhibition is as follows:-

“Leica M cameras have literally seen the world. Since its inception in 1954, photojournalists and reporters used M cameras to document moments that were seen around the world. Discreet yet powerful, M cameras have travelled the world and captured not just the soul of the subjects through the lenses, but also the photographers’. “Magic Moments” is a collection of photographs taken by M cameras through the decades by various photographers, some of which are from one of the most prestigious picture agencies, Magnum Photos. “

The 14 photographers featured in this exhibition are Sebastiao Salgado, Todd Weinstein, Ljalja Kuznetsova, William Klein, Gianni Berengo Gardin, Eric Valli, Inge Morath, Ian Berry, Larry Babis, Harry Gruyaert, Leonard Freed, Martine Frank, David Alan Harvey and Chris Steel Perkins. The oldest photograph exhibited was taken by William Klein in 1959 and the most recent was taken by Eric Valli in 1993. My favorite photograph from the exhibition is the one taken by Gianni Berengo Gardin in 1960 (see last image in the slideshow below). It is one of those highly complex photos with multiple layerings and framings. Love it!

The exhibition is free admission and officially runs till the 16th of April. Unofficially, it might run till the end of April depending on when the next exhibition is ready for setup at the Leica Store. You can always call the store (Tel: 6336 9555) to check whether the exhibition is still on if you intend to go after 16th April. The exhibition is definitely worth checking out!

Wedding: Brandon & Shiao’s ROM

I got to know Brandon a few years ago when we were working together in the media support team of a large conference. He is a stand up guy and is highly talented at using visual media as a communication tool. If you ever need to have a story told (e.g. videos to be shown at weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, or simply authentic life stories whether personal or corporate), he is the man to look for (check out www.mylesandmore.com). I am happy for Brandon that he has found someone comparable to himself. Shiao-yin, also creative and a high flyer, is a founder of the Thought Collective that includes School of Thought, Food for Thought, Thinkscape and Think Tank Publishing. BTW, the food at Food for Thought is yummy and highly recommended!

Brandon & Shiao-yin were married in a small intimate ceremony at the Botanic Gardens about 3 weeks ago. The ceremony was observed by family and a few close friends. As always, I love capturing smaller weddings which allow a higher level of intimacy and coziness compared to a large scale wedding. That said, Brandon and Shiao-yin will be having their big wedding celebration in about a month’s time and I am already looking forward to covering that!

The following are a selection of photographs from Brandon and Shiao-yin’s ROM.
